Knowledge, Knowledge Work and Support Systems – Theoretical Perspectives

This paper is a background literature study on knowledge management and planning of support systems for knowledge workers. The aim is to present a number of central issues in this problem area. Issues that are discussed include knowledge theory, knowledge workers, knowledge management, knowledge management systems, and knowledge management development. A framework made up of two dimensions, each containing two perspectives, is used as an analytic tool. These perspectives are: 1) a view on knowledge (cognitive/social) and 2) the level of analysis (individual/organisation). As result a series of contradictions and opposing forces with in each of the issues are presented.
